A nameless friend

                                                           Google Image

Night stays at window
Near my bed
                                    Not now
                                    But when I wasn’t even a teenager
It stays there
And stares
Someone’s staring isn’t so pleasing

It’s not that childhood is gone
It’s there in a different dimension
It stares
I pull my eyes close to my heart
There is something there
There is something inside the heart
A bit icy, a bit warm, fluffy, lively and strange

That something hugs me in
Then it spreads glow worms
And fairies and some cute elfins
The night now has no choice
It gets pensive
Looks around
And no longer stares
What should I call that friend
The friend who has collected all my days
                                                The whole past and
                                                 Gifted it as wisdom
Night doesn’t stare any longer
That friend is a rainbow climber
A dream chaser
A smiling forgiver
An eternal lover
A nameless partner
There is something inside the heart
A bit icy, a bit warm, fluffy, lively and strange
                                         A friend forever

  2. Particularly like the line: A bit icy, a bit warm, fluffy, lively and strange
I think we could all do with a mix of that in our souls

  5. So sorry, unexpected visitors last night have made me rather late in responding to your piece. Terrifically original, I thought - really enjoyed reading this...

  6. This is so visually appealing. I love the font, white space, and staggered alignment.

This is my favorite line: "Then it spreads glow worms" ... It reminds me of my own childhood. I loved my little Glow Worm pal. :)

I particularly liked the description of the inside of the heart...so true. There are many aspects to our hearts.

There is something in us that keeps us protected and happy! Many realize this at moments of happiness or despair!

  15. I loved this complex story -- a contrary friend who serves many roles. And the honesty of the writer is refreshing. Very well done.

Question: Your name is sreeja harikrishnan, a Hindu name, but you write in your poem about elfins and fairies. Were you raised in the West and these images come naturally, or are you playing to the readers and avoiding talking of apsaras, yakshas, devi and more?

Verb Tense Edit suggestions: (I speak several languages too)

The night now have[has] no choice

The friend who have[has] collected all my days

    1. I am a hindu and very much brought up in hindu culture. But I was educated in a Christian missionary school...in English medium....after that college education was in Hindi ....and my mother tongue is Malayalam...so...well, I hope you can imagine the situation....

And sorry for grammar glitches...I don't know why it happens...but when I am in a mood to re read what I have written, I do correct them...I will keep in mind to do it every time...

    4. Cool, thank you for sharing. I lived for 2 years in the subcontinent and use to speak a good bit of Hindi but no Dravidian tongues. I know wonder of bouncing between several languages and that is why I shared. Thanx for not minding. Again, very fun imagery -- funny about the Christian Missionary School. For a very short time I taught High School up in Woodstock (a missionary school in North India, which you may know) and similarly, in a school in Pakistan.

    5. Well, now I remember you once responded to some Hindi or Indian words I used in my poem some years back...happy to know you speak many languages..
I don't know what you found funny...but for me the fun part is that I tossed between the idea of whom to worship, Krishna or christ....as a kid in school...eventually I returned to Krishna...

Well there are as many schools as stars in India....I don't remember the one you mentioned. ...

    6. I said "Fun imagery" not that it was "funny"

It seems like you erased one of your comments saying you embraced Krishna and not Jesus. I think it matters not what we embrace but HOW we embrace it. Everything is myth, it is how we use our myths.

In your poem, your nameless friend is as complex as the Heros in the contrary Mahabharata with no clear good and bad and contrary traits of a person to fear and a person to love. I see you have posted many Siva pictures and say you are a Krishnavite, but it is all a twist of our inner psyche, no?

    7. :-) :-)

The same comment got repeated, I deleted that.

I returned to Krishna because of the unique character. ...an apt idol for kaliyuga....a lot to learn from him. You need an idol at times...otherwise I meditate on my breath...the all pervading energy.

All my God paintings are done on order...they are all sold.

There is nothing more complex than human mind...

    8. Mahabharatha is an ocean....it gives you immense knowledge on human psychology. ...but it needs to be interpreted the right way....you are right it's not about bad or good....

  18. There is something in the heart indeed! (This is difficult to read because of the background. You might think of changing it to something simpler in order to engage more readers.)☺️
